Hey, we’re Phil and Amity. We were on the first series of The Block back in 2003 (yes, it was that long ago) and were the winners of The Block All Stars series in 2013.
We never set out to be TV renovators. Back in 2003 we were carefree newlyweds, Phil had a marketing agency and I was a singer/songwriter trying to get a record deal, when we stumbled upon a new renovating TV show and thought it would be fun to be part of it. Much to our surprise The Block ended up being the highest rating show of the year, we became household names, I got a record deal and even had a top 10 album (remember The Lighthouse?) We didn’t win, but we had a ball and it certainly changed the course of our lives.
Fast forward ten years and we’d had two kids and settled in a life of domesticity in our hometown of Adelaide. Phil was still in marketing and event management and I was writing a parenting column for Essential Baby, singing with my band Hepburn and touring a musical I wrote (which turned out to be quite a hit, check out Mother, Wife and the Complicated Life for more about that!)
Then everything was turned upside down again when the producers of The Block called and asked us to be on an All Stars series. We took a lot of convincing (we hadn’t renovated since the last one and, um…social media) but eventually we took a leap of faith and said yes.
Our main aim was to have fun, not to suck too badly at the renovation and to make our kids proud. But not only did we not suck – we won the thing! We surprised everyone and proved that you don’t have to be a tradie to do a good job renovating your home, you just need to do your research, use the best people and know how to successfully manage the process.
Doing The Block again we definitely caught the renovating bug and ever since we’ve been looking to find the right property to renovate for ourselves. Despite having done two TV renos and two apartments many years ago we have never renovated our own family home, so we can’t wait.
We learned so much and discovered so many amazing products doing The Block that we want to put all of that into our own home, and we want to share it with you! We know there are many people who have followed our journey, or who are Block fans, and love renovating and decorating as much as we do, so we want to share our real life renovating experiences to give you ideas and inspirations for your own homes. We will be letting you know what works and what doesn’t, what we love and what we don’t and our ideas for adding style and value to your own home. We may not be able to pull off a bathroom reno in a week – but at least this time there will be no Scotty challenges to make time for!
So here we go again. And this time when we create our dream home – we’re not leaving.
